Of course, in the process of reporting this story, I learned it wasn't a totally different direction. Plenty of hunting dogs compete in dog shows; it's how their breeders demonstrate their quality.
Outtake: Did you know that when judges examine male dogs, they will reach between their legs to make sure the family jewels are still there? Dang, you've got to have a well-trained dog to stand still when someone's doing that to him.

Do you remember the announcer's comments upon seeing that move in "Best of Show"? Priceless.
ReplyDeleteWhy oh why did you have to do an article on dogs? I'm dying to get one right now.
I know what you mean - I spent about two hours at Baird's kennel doing the reporting and photography for this piece, and I kept watching the dogs come and go, owners in tow.
ReplyDeleteI really do love dogs, but it seems like it would be so hard to fit one into our life here. The one cool thing about doing that story is that seeing how happy dogs were when they were heading into the kennel made me feel like it wouldn't be such a strange thing to send a dog to the kennel when traveling out of town.
